A large component is moving slowly into position. The crane operator is experienced. The rigger has done this a thousand times. The lift looks controlled, the component almost aligned.
There is perhaps a metre to go. Then half a metre. Then the component begins a slow, unwanted rotation — just a few degrees — and a hand reaches forward.
The hand does not reach forward carelessly or recklessly. It reaches forward because the worker recognises an immediate operational need — to control the rotation — and no safer means of performing that function appears to be available.
The worker may be trained, competent and wearing the correct gloves for the task. Yet the exposure already exists — because the hand has entered the process, and the process has not stopped moving.

Ask a safety leader in a major industrial organisation what their hand-safety programme includes, and the answer will typically cover some combination of the following:
Gloves. PPE specifications and compliance rates. Posters and visual reminders near work areas. Toolbox talks before shifts begin. Behavioural programmes asking workers to think before reaching. These measures are not without value. Toolbox talks raise awareness. PPE specifications bring consistency. Incident investigations can surface patterns. Hand protection and hand-exposure reduction are not the same thing.
A well-specified glove provides meaningful protection against cuts, abrasions, temperature extremes and chemical contact. But a glove does not remove a hand from a pinch point, a crush zone, a suspended load, a rotating component or a closing mechanical interface. A glove may reduce the consequence of an exposure. It cannot eliminate the exposure itself.

These are fundamental ways in which hands interact with loads, components, tools and machinery during everyday industrial work. They occur across a range of sectors and environments — frequently in tasks that have never been examined in a risk assessment as hand-exposure events, because they appear routine, because they have always been done this way, or because the worker is competent and the task looks controlled.
PSC developed Find The Hand™ to simplify the identification of hand exposure — without oversimplifying the engineering, the hierarchy of controls, or the judgement required to select the right response.

Hand exposure does not begin in a safety report. It begins on the workshop floor, beside a machine, beneath a suspended component, during a maintenance task or in the final few millimetres of alignment.
It lives in holding something steady while a colleague completes a task; steadying a load because the crane operator cannot see the landing point; placing fingers beneath a structural member; catching something that begins to shift unexpectedly; reaching in to make a minor adjustment that was not anticipated before the task began.
Every day, organisations from around the world send PSC photographs, videos and descriptions of industrial tasks in which hands remain exposed to hazards they cannot yet adequately address.
From Chile and Peru to Brunei, Australia, Japan, the Middle East and across Africa — the equipment changes, the terminology changes, the working conditions change. But the hand often performs the same function.
A hand steadying a suspended load in one country is performing the same action — and facing a comparable exposure — as a hand steadying a suspended load elsewhere in the world. The load may differ. The procedure language may differ. The PPE worn may differ. But if a human hand is between a moving mass and its resting position, the fundamental exposure is recognisable.
"Find the hand" requires almost no technical translation.

A seven-step process designed for use by a safety professional, an operations manager, or an operator identifying an exposure during the task itself. The language is the same at every level.
Study how the task is actually performed — not merely how it is described in a procedure. Procedures often capture the intended sequence. They rarely capture every hand interaction that occurs in practice, particularly during final positioning, alignment and landing.
Observation may include a live workplace review, operational photographs, short videos of the task being performed, discussions with operators who perform it regularly, task demonstrations, and review of previous incidents or near misses involving similar work.
The goal is not to judge. It is to see the work as it actually happens.
Where is the hand? What is it doing? What could move? Step 2 asks these questions before any assessment begins.
Identify every moment when a hand approaches, touches or controls a load, component, tool, material or machine. Look for hands used to: hold, guide, steady, align, position, push, pull, catch, rotate, separate, retrieve, clear, test or control. Look for the moments a hand moves closer to a load or pinch zone — not only when contact is made. The exposure begins before the contact.
Do not immediately attribute the hand's presence to worker behaviour or inattention. Ask what operational need the hand is fulfilling. Is it controlling unwanted movement? Compensating for restricted visibility? Correcting a misalignment? Preventing rotation? Making up for the absence of a fixture or guide? Responding instinctively to movement that was not anticipated?
The answer reveals what the process has not provided. That is where the solution begins.
Determine what could move, fall, shift, rotate, close, recoil, release, trap, cut, strike, pull in or transfer stored energy — and from what direction, with what force and in what timeframe.
Classify the relevant exposure: pinch point · crush zone · cut or shear · impact · entanglement · caught-between · line-of-fire · stored energy · ergonomic injury.
A classified exposure can be communicated, compared, shared and managed. An unclassified exposure remains invisible.
Ask rigorously whether the hand genuinely needs to be there. Can the manual interaction be eliminated by changing the task sequence? Can a fixture, guide or jig provide the function? Can it be mechanised or automated? Can the interaction be performed from a greater distance? Does the task need redesign at a more fundamental level?
Select the most suitable control for the actual task, load, movement and environment. Confirm it removes or meaningfully reduces the exposure — not merely that it appears safer.
A control should not merely look safer. It must change the relationship between the hand and the hazard.
Document the activity, the hand interaction, the exposure, the control selected, the trial outcome, any remaining limitations and similar applications identified elsewhere. One plant's solution may apply directly at a facility in a different country.
Three principles work together to provide a complete framework.
When the process is relying on a biological structure to perform a mechanical function, the hand is at risk if movement continues or conditions change. The hand should not routinely function as a hook, guide, clamp, wedge, alignment aid or load-control device.
Identify where the human hand has entered the industrial process and what function it is performing. This makes The Human Hand Is Not a Tool™ actionable at the task level.
Give particular attention to the final stage of positioning and alignment. As clearances reduce, visibility may be restricted and the tendency to use fingers for fine control increases. When reviewing a task for hand exposure, the closing phase is a consistent and important place to look.

Both workers are in direct physical contact with a moving suspended load. Their hands are performing the guiding function. No separation exists between the hand and the load's movement zone.

The hand is performing the function of a guidance and positioning device. The process has not provided a mechanical means of doing this.
The load still requires guidance, but the hand no longer needs to touch it. An appropriately selected PSC load-control tool allows the operator to influence movement while maintaining separation from the suspended component.
